Assembly and Lineup in the Basketball Gym
The assembly and line-up of seniors in the Basketball Gym is crucial to having a smoothly flowing Commencement. Seniors will arrive at the O'Keefe Center promptly at 8:30 am. There will be tables situated just outside of the Basketball Gym. Go to the table identified with the first letter of your last name and you will receive a 3 x 5 card with a number on it. KEEP YOUR NAME CARD AT ALL TIMES. It will be presented on stage just prior to the announcement of your degree.
Take the card into the Basketball Gym with your cap and gown and look for the bleacher section which matches the number on your card. Go to that section and take a seat on the bleachers in roughly numerical order as shown on the signs in each section. College staff will arrange you in final order for the academic procession. Once you are placed in order, RETAIN that position in line, especially during the procession from the gym to the seating area on the rink floor. Because degrees on stage are arranged in the same order as the students in line, if you do not maintain your place in line, you will not receive your own degree.
Processional to Rink & Conferring of Degrees
On signal from staff, each gym section will be led to the rink area. Take seats in the rink area as directed. Please remain standing in front of your chair until Platform Guests arrive on stage. From the stage, a signal will be given to be seated. Ushers will signal, row-by-row, for individuals to proceed to the stage to receive degrees.
After you receive your degree, return to your seat while the remaining graduates receive their degrees. At the end of the exercises, ushers will signal when to begin the Recessional.
Degree/Honors
Honor cords will be distributed in the gym to seniors graduating with academic honors which are based on a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher at the end of Fall 2007 semester for those students who have earned at least 60 credits at SSC.
Caps and Gowns
Caps and gowns are available at the SSC Bookstore at Central Campus beginning on Thursday, April 17, 2008. To purchase your cap and gown or for more information, please contact the Bookstore at Central Campus, 978-542-3808.
Provisions For Graduates Or Guests With Disabilities
Graduates with disabilities planning to attend Commencement Exercises should stop by Meier Hall, Room 102 or call 978-542-6217 by Monday, May 5, 2008, to make any special arrangements for seating. Seating by special arrangement for guests with disabilities is limited to parties of four (4).
Photography
A commercial photographer will be located on the rink floor just in front of the center stage stairs. A picture of each student is taken as the degree is presented. The taking of pictures from the aisles on the rink floor is prohibited.
Alcoholic Beverages
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited from being taken to Commencement, and if brought into the O'Keefe Center will be confiscated. Use of alcoholic beverages before or during Commencement may be sufficient reason for prohibiting an individual from participating in Commencement.
