Communications has become one of the growth fields of the new century. The Bachelor of Science in Communications combines theory and practice, professional standards and hands-on experience to equip students with the skills to take on professional roles in the information age. Intensive courses in writing, editing, research, and computer production along with a concentration in journalism, public relations or advertising prepare students to work in a variety of communications fields. Students in the major often get credit working at an internship position, writing for the Salem State College newspaper, and /or assisting in the Communications computer lab. The capstone course Seminar requires seniors to create a professional portfolio of their work and consider their options in the professional world or graduate school.
The Communications major includes the following concentrations:
- Journalism
- Public Relations
- Advertising
The minor in Communications offers four choices to students:
- Journalism
- Public Relations
- Advertising
- Communications Studies
The Communications Department has launched a series of brief video clips for our web site that highlight our work and programs.
