Green Transportation Options

Overview

Commuting accounts for 30 percent of Salem State’s greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce our environmental footprint and decrease traffic and parking demands, Salem State offers a comprehensive suite of alternatives to driving alone. Hop on the MBTA Bus #455, take the commuter train, borrow a Bluebike, or enjoy the rail trail to downtown Salem.

Additional Green Transportation Programs

Viking Shuttle

Travel around campus with Salem State’s free Vikings Shuttle Service, which operates Monday-Friday from 7:15 am-4 pm.

Student-Run Shuttle

The student-run shuttle provides transportation between campuses, downtown and to Market Basket on evenings and weekends.

Pre-Tax Employee Benefits

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts offers full-time, benefited employees pre-tax transit and parking benefits up to $265 per month. This could be used for a monthly T-pass, for example. Learn more about this benefit administered by Benefit Strategies.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

EV charing stations on the Salem State campus

Salem State has 23 parking spots with electric vehicle charging across campus. They are located inside and next to the parking garage on North Campus, behind Viking, and at the O'Keefe Center parking lot.

Preferred Parking for Carpoolers and EVs

The student parking garage offers features to encourage commuters who are trying to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by carpooling or driving electric vehicles or other alternative vehicles.

Employees seeking carpool or vanpool partners are encouraged to utilize BayState Commute, a free service helping commuters find greener ways to travel.
