SSC Laboratory Schools

We host four laboratory schools where you may complete field work at any level of your program, from introductory observation experience to full-time student teaching. Our Pre-School and the Horace Mann Lab School are located on campus, with the Saltonstall School a few blocks away. You may request placements at these schools depending on course and certification requirements. Specific teachers within these schools are designated Laboratory School Supervisors with special responsibilities for our Education students.

  • The Horace Mann Laboratory School (PK-5)
Horace Mann Laboratory School, also housed on campus, is a pre-K to grade 5 elementary school whose curriculum emphasizes literacy development. The Horace Mann subscribes to the responsive classroom approach to holistic education, which promotes the idea that the school and the classroom are communities of learners. Children learn and practice social behaviors along with their academic tasks.
  • The Robert L. Ford School (PK-8)
Robert L. Ford Elementary and Middle School in Lynn is a pre-K to grade 8 culturally diverse, urban community school. Ford espouses the "full-service" school model, founded on the idea that many families need social and health services to support the education of their children. Ford, therefore, offers before- and after-school day care services, an in-house health center and psychologist and evening classes for parents in ESL, GED high school equivalency and citizenship.
  • The Saltonstall School (PK-5)
Saltonstall Elementary School in Salem, MA is a year-round, multi-age grade (K-1, 2-3, 4-5 classrooms) school. It offers a multiple-intelligences approach to instruction, where learning activities incorporate the linguistic, mathematical, musical, kinesthetic and social talents of all children. The curriculum covers all subject areas with special emphasis on science and technology.
  • The Salem State Preschool
Salem State Preschool, housed on campus, serves the children of faculty, students and staff. It offers a warm, family-like environment and follows the constructivist Reggio Emilia approach to instruction. Teachers draw on children's natural curiosity to generate activities aimed at a deep understanding of substantive content. Children and teachers document learning through art projects and dictated writing. Recently, our preschool children have engaged in a study of Jane Goodall's research and Nathaniel Hawthorne!
