School of Arts and Sciences
Welcome
As always, we have been joined by a number of full-time personnel since last September. Some are joining us for the first time, others, of course, are coming on board after a period serving as part-time or full-time temporary faculty.
I know you will take the time to (re-)introduce yourself to these folks and will help them feel part of our community:

I want to encourage you, please, to remember that the Monday community time is intended to allow all members of the Salem State community the opportunity to participate in events they might otherwise not be free to attend. Whenever possible, do not schedule yourself for any departmental commitments, committee work, or office hours during this time.
Perhaps the most exciting change in school activities this coming year will be the November launch of the on-line only, ASpect. A lot of work has gone into this project over the summer and I am sure you will be impressed by the results. The redesign should allow for far greater participation in the content of ASpect by all of us. I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities you identify for yourself when you see the first issue.
The school annual retreat will be on January 9, 2009. Very soon, we will be able to announce our keynote speaker. The event will once again be held at the Hawthorne Hotel. This year, in addition to the traditional events and workshops, we are delighted that Cornerstone Books will have a table in the hotel lobby where you will be able to browse and buy books of interest you might have missed throughout the year.
Throughout academic year 2009, Salem State College will be working to implement some of the key recommendations of the Foundations of Excellence year and we will also be participating in the Wabash study on the liberal arts.
A new provost will start on campus in January and a new dean of the school should be in place by the end of this academic year. This set of circumstances gives us all an opportunity to reshape and refocus both the school's purpose and also the college's. I am sure you will take every opportunity to participate in making sure the future is one that lives up to our proudest traditions and which allows us to move forward, committed to the important but demanding task of meeting our most fundamental mission, to educate all our students to the best of our abilities.
