Sociology
Sociology at Salem State College advocates the development of a perspective that enables the student to see the dynamics and significance of the social context and its profound effect on the individual. While making no specific claims to modify the cultural mode, the study of sociology enables the person to develop a certain freedom brought about by appreciation of the cultural context.
Sociological insights promote an enhanced sense of awareness of the individual's place in social structure and a deeper understanding of the nature and demands of a complex world.
The second goal of the program is to build a foundation for participation in a variety of academic and professional roles. The major in sociology is excellent preparation for experiences in graduate school, law school or other professional training. Many graduates have gone into government or public service and others have found success in the private sector in such careers as human relations, social service, criminal justice, personnel management, sales and various entrepreneurial activities.
