Master of Science in Criminal Justice

The master of science in criminal justice is a fully online (asynchronous) program designed for those who want to advance or pursue careers in criminal justice as well as those who plan to secure a doctoral degree in the field. A robust combination of theory and research, our program is Quinn Bill approved and adheres to the standards of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for graduate programs.

Program Overview

Salem State’s criminal justice curriculum emphasizes applied theory and research, and is rooted in social justice—preparing students to assess, analyze, and respond to complex social problems ethically and equitably. You will acquire advanced knowledge of current and developing criminological theory, data analysis, and criminal justice policy and practice. Our curriculum develops the competencies needed to conduct sophisticated crime analyses, use academic research to inform decision-making and develop effective public policy responses, preparing you for leadership roles in your chosen field.

The program is 36 credit hours and consists of courses in three areas: core, concentration and electives. Students may elect to complete a thesis. Students can complete the program in as few as 18 months if they take three courses per semester, including one summer course load. However, many of our enrolled students opt to complete their graduate degrees on a part-time basis.

There are two concentrations: criminology and administration of criminal justice. You can tailor your degree to your interests by choosing the elective courses that fulfill either concentration. Many electives count towards both concentrations.

The MS in criminal justice prepares students for leadership roles in their chosen fields. Many of our students are already employed in the field and are seeking to advance their careers. Professional opportunities in criminal justice are diverse and include areas such as law enforcement, homeland security, security management, corrections, probation, and criminal investigation.
