Testing note
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, GRE, GMAT and MTEL testing has temporarily been waived from the application requirements for a number of our graduate programs through spring 2026.
Choose the program option best for you
The Initial Licensure Only program does not lead to an academic degree. The program offers a pathway to initial licensure in a range of secondary science/STEM areas, including biology (grade 8-12), chemistry (grade 8-12), earth science (grade 8-12), general science (grade 5 – 8), and mathematics/science (grade 5-8).
While this program is not eligible for financial aid, the MEd programs are.

Application Process
Required Materials
- $50 non-refundable application fee
- Official transcript or transcript evaluation, from all institutions attended
- Three references
- Statement of purpose, addressing your interest in teaching at the secondary level (grades 8-12 and/or grades 5-8) and any teaching experience (formal or informal) that you have
- English Proficiency, if applicable for international applicants
- This Licensure Only Secondary Science certificate program does not require the GRE or MAT
Additional Materials
- A photocopy of teacher's license(s) that you may hold.
- Passing scores on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Communications and Literacy test.
- A passing score on the MTEL in the subject area portion appropriate to this program and the license being sought.
- If you do not have teacher preparation coursework or do not possess a bachelor’s degree in the major, please consult with the graduate program coordinator.
- Interview
Prerequisites
- Undergraduate major in biology, chemistry, geological sciences or closely related field (for license candidates in biology, chemistry, earth science, respectively) or a transcript evaluation by the program coordinator (for middle school general science and mathematics/science candidates).
- Course in adolescent psychology (undergraduate or graduate)
- If you do not have a course in adolescent psychology and/or do not possess a bachelor’s degree in the major related to your desired licensure area, please consult with the graduate program coordinator.
