Sextant
For more than three decades, Sextant: The Journal of Salem State University presented the research, scholarship, and creative activity of Salem State faculty, librarians, staff, and administrators. From 1986 until 2019, the faculty-produced, multidisciplinary magazine combined the learned rigor of an academic journal with the accessible style and format of a general-audience magazine. From its inception, the Sextant upheld Salem State University’s mission “to provide a high quality, student-centered education that prepares a diverse community of learners to contribute responsibly and creatively to a global society, and serve as a resource to advance the region's cultural, social and economic development.”
The Sextant engaged its readers in the intellectual life of Salem State University by conveying the excitement of creativity, discovery, and the rigors of research as faculty, librarians, staff, and administrators working in all fields-- including arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, business, nursing, and more--told their stories.
Though the Sextant's publication is on indefinite hiatus, those interested in reading it can access back issues in three ways:
- Read virtual copies of the magazine
- Contact librarians at the archives of the Frederick E. Berry Library. The archives holds several copies of each back issue.
- Contact staff at the office of the College of Arts and Sciences. The office has copies of each back issue.
