Understanding graduate admissions tests

Information About Various Graduate Admissions Tests

As part of your application, most of our educator preparation programs require the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). Most require passing scores on the Communication and Literacy exam, both the reading and writing subtest. Some programs require a passing score on the related subject area test as well.

Please refer to our program-specific application requirements for specific MTEL testing requirements.

When you take the MTEL, you can indicate Salem State as a recipient school so we can receive the scores electronically.

Salem State can only accept official scores directly from the evaluation system. Score report can be requested using the reprint request form (allow 2 to 4 weeks for processing).

Sealed scores can then be delivered to the Graduate Admissions office or mailed to:

There are three ways that applicants can demonstrate English proficiency:

  1. Obtaining a minimum required score on an approved English Proficiency examination
  2. Successfully completing an approved intensive English language program
  3. Received a high school, bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree from an institution in the United States or one of the countries listed.

  • Generally you are exempt from submitting the GRE or MAT if you already hold a master's degree or higher. Some programs do require your degree to be in a related field, so check your program’s specific application requirements.
  • Graduate Program coordinators and the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies may waive the required entrance exams if the applicant has proven academic ability in the academic program by receiving a 3.5 GPA in two or more classes within the area of study, taken at Salem State University, prior to seeking admissions into the graduate program. This does not supersede pre-existing policies.
