#Salemstatealum #SSUMomentOur next drone alumni feature celebrates the work of Rebecca Smalley '22, '23G, GIS specialist for the Essex County Greenbelt Association, located in Essex, MA!
"I earned my bachelor's degree in Cartography in 2022 and my master's degree in Geo-Information Science in 2023 from Salem State. I currently work for Essex County Greenbelt Association, a land trust organization with a mission to conserve land throughout Essex County, Massachusetts.
While at Greenbelt, I pioneered our drone program where we use a DJI Mavic 3E drone to collect high resolution data of Greenbelt's conservation projects.
We use this data to create ortho mosaic images of our properties, aid our GIS staff with georeferencing plans, and we are planning to use it to evaluate properties at risk from flooding throughout Essex County to generate climate assessment plans.
The Geography + Sustainability Department at Salem State University provided me with the skills and expertise needed to get me where I am today.
During my time as a student, I was able to gain skills in cartography, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and drone mapping.
Furthermore, the professors in the Geography and Sustainability Department are great mentors, providing students with research, internships, and career opportunities."

Kyle McElroy graduated from Salem State University in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, after which, he was hired by the Newburyport Police. He is assigned to the Newburyport Schools and was nominated by another officer in the department.
In honor of Officer McElroy, Newburyport High School Class of 2024 dedicated their yearbook to SRO McElroy! They wrote in their yearbook about how SRO McElroy makes a difference in the school and always puts a smile on everyone’s faces. One student wrote, “He protects our class and advocates for safety” and published that with many other quotes in the yearbook.
Congratulations to Officer Kyle McElroy for his outstanding performance and keeping the kids of Newburyport Schools safe! We thank you!
