Art, Memory, and Reconciliation: The Mission of Kuma International in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Jan 30
Dr. Claudia Zini, an art historian and founder of Kuma International

Please join Salem State Professor Stephenie Young for a research conversation with Dr. Claudia Zini, an art historian and founder of Kuma International, a nonprofit dedicated to researching and promoting understanding of visual arts from post-conflict societies. Kuma explores how art contributes to reconciliation, healing, and the preservation of memory with a particular focus on post-war environments such as Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through educational programs, workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations with artists and scholars, Kuma fosters dialogue and understanding across cultures and regions affected by conflict.

Originally from Italy, Dr. Claudia Zini moved to Sarajevo in 2015 and has since dedicated her work to exploring the intersections of art, memory, and healing in post-war contexts. She holds a PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and has extensive experience curating, teaching, and writing on contemporary art. Recognized for her commitment to social engagement and cultural diplomacy, she was recently awarded the prestigious Order of the Star of Italy for her contributions to strengthening ties between Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This event is free and open to the public. It will take place in person and will also be livestreamed on zoom. Registration is required.
