Two events dealing with sea level rise and sustainable landscapes anchor day two of Salem State's Earth Days celebration.
- Pollinator Gardens and Miyawaki Forests, Ellison Campus Center, Martin Luther King, Jr. room. 12:15-1:15 pm
Landscape Expert Suzanne Hale has created a Miyawaki forest in neighboring Swampscott by planting a dense pocket of native species to create a diverse, multi-layered forest community. Forests planted via the Miyawaki method grow faster and with greater biodiversity than typical planting methods and can be used to regenerate urban areas. Suzanne will also discuss the benefits of pollinator gardens, native species selection, and proper planting techniques. Attendees will learn how to care for seedlings and will plant their own partridge pea and/or calico aster plants which they will be able to take home.
- Film Inundation District, Ellison Campus Center, Martin Luther King Jr. room. 1:40-3:15 pm
Directed by Pulitzer prize-winning director David Abel, this film explores the implications of Boston’s decision to ignore the threats posed by climate change and spend billions of dollars building a new waterfront district — on landfill, at sea level, and in the bullseye of rising seas.
