A Teacher Workshop

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies invites educators to participate in a one-day workshop on the Guatemalan genocide and its legacies. With presentations by Salem State University professors Avi Chomsky and Stephenie Young, the workshop will explore the history of Guatemala’s 36-year armed conflict and the genocide of the Maya people. During the workshop, teachers will consider the history of dirty wars in Latin America with Guatemala as a case study. Additionally, teachers will explore current issues in the region, including the crises behind Central American migration in the 21st century and the situation of Central American migrants in Massachusetts. Separate sessions will integrate the genocide inside the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, explore oral testimonies and other essential primary sources, and identify best practices for teaching these complex and sensitive issues in the classroom.
