The Sophia will be lit on Saturday, February 1 with a Hip Hop Dance Showcase featuring The Floor Lords! 

Artist include: 

  • Jarell Howard Rochelle - Professor of Dance at Salem State University, known for his appearances So You Think You Can Dance, and stamped as a hip-hop "popping legend" from Alief Texas.
  • Jo Jo Caidor - Professor of Hip Hop Dance at Salem State University and Director of HDE & AFMOHIP, Hip Hop Afro-Haitian Modern Fusion Dance Company
  • Luis Davila - Professional Movement artist who has performed in front of The Boston Celtics and has rocked many dance battle stages across the US!
  • LandMine - World of Dance Boston Champion for 2018. Red Bull Dance Your Style Top 16 contestant, he is a multi-faceted artist and and a community educator
  • Bboy El Niño - Member of Team USA - Paris Olympics 2024, performed with artists such as Missy Elliot, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and has appeared in the movies, Step Up 3D and In the Heights.
  • Phunk Mob is Phunk Phenomenon's teen company, ages 12-18. Recent performances include Bring Da Hype, Hip Hop International, Prelude New England, GreenFest and Jacob's Pillow.
  • Lil Phunk is the Official Junior Dance Team for the Boston Celtics who have been featured on Paula Abdul's "Live to Dance" and America's Got Talent.
  • The Floor Lords use the positive aspect of hip hop dance to reach and empower youth, worldwide. Since 1981, the Floor Lords have been awarded and recognized as pillars of the Boston community for focusing on positive impact of dance.

This is the final event of our Intergenerational Hip Hop Dance Symposium. All symposium events are free and all ages are welcome! 

January 30 

Workshop with LandMine - 1:40-2:55 pm, O'Keefe 303

Dance Battle  - 4:30-8 pm- Vets Hall, ECC

January 31

Workshop with BBoy El Nino -12:15-1:30 pm, O'Keefe 303

Film Festival - 7:30 pm, Sophia Gordon Center

This event is presented by Music and Dance in conjunction with the Center for Creative and Performing Arts with additional support from B.E.E.S., The Brotherhood, First Year Success and Alpha Lambda Delta (First Year Honor Society).and an SSU Strategic Planning Small Grant award.
