Shadow & Light: Patricia Scialo/David Henry

Please note that this event has already occurred.

Patricia Scialo: My continued concentration with alternative photographic processes has taken on a mixed-media approach. When altering the surface of a photographic print I use materials such as oil, graphite, encaustic and found-materials for embedding.

These techniques allow me to build layers, adding depth to the photographic imagery. Hand work is vital to the print-making process.

Rediscovered through the lens of my camera, the subject is often transformed, recreated, with the intention to give the viewer a desire to pause and look closer.

Light is the element of design that catches my eye when looking at subjects. Light allows me to enhance the subject and create a point of interest. Light allows the magic to happen when processing with photographic chemistry.

Patricia is the 2020 winner of the Julia Margaret Cameron Gala Awards, Barcelona, professional section, in the categories of Abstract, Alternative Processes, and Children.

David Henry has been making pictures for over 50 years.  He refers to himself as a documentary photographer whose subject is life as it is lived by people in in the first part of the 21st century.  After photographing what he sees outside,  he goes to his studio and “re” sees – with a mind and spirit honed over a lifetime of looking at pictures – art, snapshots, media, the internet.

Henry has an M.F.A. from Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY and has a 40-year career working in art museums. 30 of those years were as an educator and programmer at the Walker Art Center, the RISD Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Between 2009 and 2018 he served as the Bill T. Jones Director of Performing and Media Arts at the ICA.
