Study and Travel Course: Poland and the Holocaust

Join the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the History Department for a study and travel course to Poland in April 2025. “HST991/EDG845: Teaching the Holocaust in Poland” is specifically designed for graduate students and current and future educators administrators interested in learning more deeply about the Holocaust in Poland. The course includes three evening seminars during the spring semester followed by group travel to Poland during MA school vacation from April 18-26, 2025.

With special attention to learning and teaching methods and strategies, we will visit:

  • Locally guided tour of Krakow, Poland with a visit to Jagiellonian University
  • Guided tour of the former Jewish Quarter, the Krakow Ghetto, the Memorial Site of the Plaszow Concentration Camp, and free time to visit Oscar Schindler's Factory (Krakow)
  • Specially designed educational tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp and class meeting with the museum’s social media director
  • Tour of the former Kielce Ghetto and Kielce Pogrom Memorial Site
  • Visit to the Jewish Historical Institute with an educational tour of the Warsaw Ghetto and free time to visit the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews
  • Visit to the Pawiak Prison Museum and the Warsaw Rising Museum

There will be free time in Krakow and Warsaw to develop your own itinerary and visit separate museums, sites, restaurants, and/or cultural events.

Registered students are eligible for $500 scholarships to help cover the separate cost of 3 graduate credits at SSU. Students can register for HST 991 or EDG 845 depending on their program (MA, MAT, HGS Certificate, 4+1 program). 3 graduate credits can be converted to 67.5 PDPs for re-licensing of professional teachers.
