Enjoy a summer afternoon in Italy with the  Salem State Summer Orchestra. This free concert under the direction of SSU music professor Mary-Jo Grenfell includes a selection of Overtures by Rossini and Donizetti. Orchestra bass player Marcel Mavarez will be the featured tenor soloist in Rossini's "Languir per una bella" from L'italiania in Algeri and "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'elisir d'amore by Donizetti. The program concludes with Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite 1.

The Salem State Summer Orchestra provides an enriching experience and opportunity for musicians to read, rehearse, and perform music from the symphonic and chamber repertoire. The ensemble is a community orchestra comprised of intermediate and advanced musicians. The participants meet to play orchestral music, and also have an opportunity to form chamber ensembles with other members of the ensemble. This community ensemble is available at no cost and there is no audition required.
