English professor Jan Lindholm will present hymns from her published collection, Love Astounding: Hymns of Jeannette M. Lindholm. She will share how choices that she makes as a hymn writer relate to her religious traditions, spiritual experience, and commitments as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Audience members will be invited to sing along and to offer questions and comments. All are welcome. No reservations (or singing experience) required.
For over twenty-five years, Jeannette (Jan) Lindholm has served as a member of Salem State’s English Department where she teaches courses in writing, rhetorical theory, and literature. Lindholm’s hymns appear in a variety of hymnals and hymnal supplements, including Songs for the Holy Other: Affirming the LGBTQIA2S+ Community, Resounding Voices, All Creation Sings, Voices Together, Evangelical Lutheran Worship, and Voices Found: Women in the Church’s Song. Her book, Love Astounding: Hymns of Jeannette M. Lindholm, was published by Augsburg Fortress in 2023. Lindholm’s texts have been set to music for choral anthems by Kevin Siegfried (“Annunciation”), Peter Pindar Stearns (“As Ruth Refused Naomi’s Pleas”), David C. Pike (“Each Road”), and Robert Buckley Farlee (“Unexpected and Mysterious”).
Lindholm holds a PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of Minnesota as well as degrees from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN (BA in German and English, 1983), Indiana University (MA in English Language and Literature, 1986), and Boston University School of Theology (MTS, 1999) where she studied hymn writing with Carl P. Daw, Jr.
