Life Outside the Classroom

Unified basketball players on the court

In March 2024, the Community of Inclusive Scholars, in a significant move, partnered with Campus Life and Rec and the SOAR/Embark Program to compete in Salem State University's first Unified Basketball game. This event, which was a resounding success, not only promoted inclusivity and diversity but also fostered a strong sense of community among the participants and spectators. The game's impact on the Salem State community was profound, leaving a lasting impression and a sense of pride among all who were involved.

The Salem Pantry Truck

Over the fall and spring semesters, our dedicated CIS students have been instrumental in the success of The Salem Pantry's pop-up food truck. Their contribution, no matter how big or small, has been invaluable. This weekly, cost-free, mobile food pantry, a joint effort between Salem State and The Salem Pantry, significantly impacts our community. By directly providing fresh produce and healthy, shelf-stable food, we are proactively addressing food insecurity in Salem and at Salem State.

The Community of Inclusive Scholars co-hosts the highly anticipated Stuff a Plush at 'Twas the Night each year. This annual tradition celebrates fun and camaraderie, allowing students to unwind before finals. With a late-night breakfast, carnival games, a candy bar, and plush stuffing stations, it promises a good time for all, creating an atmosphere of excitement and engagement.

The MAIPSE initiative has three prongs: academics, campus life participation, and employment exploration. CIS students participate in internships that provide them with the skills employers value, such as flexible thinking, balancing multiple roles, self–direction, time management, communication, accepting feedback, and using support and technology.

Internships are two to four hours a week, with first-year students having internships on campus and second-year students off campus. On-campus sites have included Berry Library, the Enrollment Office, the Music Department, the IT office, the Navigation Center, the SSU bookstore, Campus Police, and the food pantry. Off-campus sites have included the Peabody-Essex Museum, the Bertram House, the Marblehead Swampscott YMCA preschool, Starbucks, NSEC teaching assistant, Essex County District Attorney’s Office, Northshore/MGH Medical Center, and CVS. New employment partners are always being added!
