The Salem State community has made the university police department (UPD) aware that there are a number of apparently abandoned bicycles on campus. In response, this summer the UPD, together with our partners in residence life, will be launching an initiative to address abandoned bicycles in the various campus racks and the bicycle storage room of the university.
Salem State encourages bicycling as a healthy and green activity, and we want our bike riding Vikings to have an available place to safely secure their bikes when they are on campus. To increase the available space in the bike racks and storage room, we will be removing apparently abandoned bikes which are cluttering those areas. It is our intention to leave in place those bikes which are owned/in-use by our current community members. We need the Salem State community’s help in this effort by identifying those bikes which are still owned/in use so that we only remove those bikes that are actually abandoned.
To this end, the university police and residence life will make available lengths of fabric ribbon in Viking orange for you to “mark” your bike as “in-use”. Simply pick up a free length of this ribbon, which will be available at the university police station (located on the Harrington/Central Campus) or Atlantic Hall front desk, and then tie that ribbon to your handlebars. Bicycles that are on campus with an orange ribbon tied to the handlebars this summer will not be removed and therefore not affected by this initiative.
However, bikes that are not marked with ribbon, as described above, by August 19, 2024, will be removed from where they are found on, or shortly after, that date. This WILL include removal by SSU police officers by cutting locks to remove an apparently abandoned bike from the racks.
Please! If you have a bike on campus, help us by supporting this project. Tie on orange ribbon, show your Viking pride, and show UPD that your bike is in-use and should be left where it is.
Serviceable bikes that are collected as abandoned will be disposed of by donation or otherwise disposed of according to UPD property procedures shortly after the beginning of the academic year.
If your bike was removed by this initiative and you would like your bike returned, please contact the university police department at 978.542.6111 or email police@salemstate.edu for further instructions.
