Back-to-School Tips from Counseling Services

Counseling services knows that the start of a new school year can be exciting, and at times stressful, but they are here to help. Counseling service staff are available to assist students and resources are available for mental health emergencies

While you continue to get settled into your new community and routine, here are a few tips to make the transition a little easier. 

  • Get to know campus: Take some time to explore your new space or get refamiliarized with it take some time to explore your new space, or, if you're a returning Viking, get refamiliarized with it! There are lots of gems in and around our campus and finding your favorite spots can help it feel like home.

  • Get Involved:  Jump into campus life by attending a club or organization meeting, it’s important to take a little time and help build your support network and learn cool new things.

  • Get organized: Staying on top of deadlines will help you feel less overwhelmed. Start experimenting now with planners and digital calendars to find what works best for you. Salem State also has peer tutors available to help you get on track and find systems that will help you be the most successful.

  • Find balance: Between studying, socializing, working and exploring, it’s important to remember to take time for yourself. There’s a LOT to take in, and you need time to integrate! Set aside some time for a walk, a good book, or just some nice downtime. Salem State’s Gassett Fitness Center has expanded their offerings and hours for fall, to help you stay healthy and recharge this fall.

  • Reach out for support: If you’re feeling homesick or stressed, don’t hesitate to talk to a friend, RA, or one of our excellent counselors here at CHS. Everyone is here to support you!
