Professor Zlatinka Blaber Awarded Educator of the Year

Associate Professor Zlatinka Blaber was recently awarded the “Outstanding Educator of the Year” by the Massachusetts Society of CPA’s. In addition to granting this prestigious award to Professor Blaber, the organization is donating $1000 to BSB's accounting and finance department.

Salem State Fly Fishing Class Featured in Boston Globe Metro Section

In the Monday, April 29 edition of the Boston Globe Salem State students were featured and photographed participating in their first fly fishing field trip. The students were hosted by a private fly fishing club in Saugus, MA called Malden Anglers. Sport and movement science (SMS) has been offering the Introduction to Fly Fishing the past two Spring semesters for credit that encompasses creating their own flies, entomology, Leave No Trace, casting, and embracing the outdoors.

SSU to host the Inaugural Hispanic and Minority Serving Institution Conference- July 18 & 19

This conference will bring together Hispanic Serving Institutions, Minority Serving Institutions and emerging Hispanic Serving Institutions to build community and increase capacity to intentionally “serve” this student population with the intent to close equity gaps and create a higher educational environment where all students can thrive. 

This conference is funded by a HEIF consortium grant with Bunker Hill Community College, Holyoke Community College and MassBay Community College.

Outstanding First Year Advocate Awards 2024

First Year Experience is honored to announce the recipients of the 2023-2024 Outstanding First Year Advocate Award. 

The Outstanding First Year Advocate Award recognizes faculty, staff, and student leaders who have made significant contributions to the academic and/or personal lives of first year students. The award allows the community to recognize individuals who have demonstrated a specific commitment to and impact on first year student learning, development and success. 

This year’s recipients are faculty members Anne DeFelippo (Nursing) and Noel Healy (Geography and Sustainability); staff members Ashleyne Alexis (Center for Academic Excellence) and Anne Collins (Marketing); and student leaders Onyx Dziuba (Residence Life) and Erika Pen (ASA President). 

Dr. Marcos Luna Delivers Keynote Address at Harvard Conference on Civically Engaged Scholarship

Professor Marcos Luna (geography and sustainability) gave the keynote address at Harvard’s Ninth Annual Scholarship and Social Justice Conference. Professor Luna shared his journey and lessons learned, in becoming a scholar and advocate for environmental justice.

In addition to teaching and published research on environmental justice, Luna is a governor-appointed member of the Massachusetts Environmental Justice Council, an appointed member of a committee for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to provide recommendations on mapping disadvantaged communities, and he serves as an elected officer of the board of directors for GreenRoots, an environmental justice community organization serving Chelsea and East Boston. He spoke to undergraduate researchers from more than 20 colleges and universities from across the country who are seeking to find their own paths on balancing scholarship, civic engagement, and social justice.

SpeakEasy Stage Founder and Artistic Director Paul Daigneault to Receive Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from Salem State’s Center for Creative and Performing Arts

Salem State’s Center for Creative and Performing Arts (CCPA) will honor Paul Daigneault, founder and artistic director of SpeakEasy Stage, with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award on May 8. This award is given to an individual who has impacted their field as an artist, educator and changemaker.

The ceremony will take place during the Center’s annual Creativity Awards and Celebration of the Arts on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 pm. The event is held in Salem State’s Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts, 356 Lafayette Street, Salem.

Dr. Marcos Luna Quoted on WBUR

Geography and sustainability Professor Marcos Luna was interviewed by WBUR for his assessment and perspectives about new research showing significant indoor air pollution from gas stoves which may be tied to thousands of cases of asthma across the country. Equally important, the risks of this exposure are greatest for low income households and people of color.
