The 2016 Outstanding First Year Advocacy Awards Recipients have been chosen! Congratulations to: John McArdle, Lisa Johnson, Melissa Thayer, Ashley Preston, Mohamed Amine Mesnaoui, and Stella Willis. Thank you for your dedication to our students!

The Outstanding First Year Advocate Award recognizes faculty, staff and upper-class students staff/leaders who have made a positive impact on the first year experience. In support of the university’s focus on first-year student success and retention efforts, these awards allow the community to recognize those individuals who have demonstrated a specific commitment to and impact on first year student learning, development and success.



This award is open to faculty, staff and upper-class student staff/leaders in all areas of the university who have made significant contributions to the academic and/or personal lives of first-year students and have worked to ensure a positive transition for first year students.

Nominees for the Outstanding First Year Advocate Award may have:

  • Assisted in the successful acclimation of first-year students to the university
  • Provided tools or support to assist first-year students
  • Helped first-year students to achieve academic and/or personal success
  • Promoted a welcoming campus environment among first-year students
  • Exhibited a positive attitude that fostered a positive first year experience
  • Demonstrated outstanding commitment to first-year student success in and/or outside of the classroom
  • Encouraged student involvement on campus and/or within the community among first-year students

Any first-year student, faculty or staff member at Salem State University may submit a nomination. If individuals wish to submit multiple nominations, a separate nomination form for each individual will be required.
