SALEM, MASS – Alyce Davis ’75, a Salem resident and Salem State University alum, has returned to the institution’s board of trustees after being appointed to the body by Gov. Maura Healey.
Davis, a retired assistant superintendent in the Salem Public Schools, has worked in the education field for nearly 50 years following her graduation from Salem State with a bachelor’s degree in middle school education in 1975. Hired straight out of college to teach social studies in Hanover, her career also brought her to Danvers Public Schools for 18 years prior to her arrival in Salem as a principal at Witchcraft Heights Elementary School from 2000 to 2006. She then served as assistant superintendent of the district until retiring in 2010.
Since then, Davis has held various consulting positions and served as an adjunct professor at Salem State from 2005 to 2010, and Endicott College from 2010 to 2017. Her post-undergrad work also continued after graduating from Salem State, with a master’s in education from Suffolk University in 1979 and a doctorate in educational leadership from NOVA Southeastern University in 2009.
Davis’ recent appointment to the Salem State University Board of Trustees follows a five-year period serving the board from 2012 to 2017 as an alumnae trustee. She’s returning alongside three other newly appointed members of the body, who all started July 1.
“Serving as a trustee is both an honor and a privilege. I understand that in accepting this role, I commit to doing my utmost in helping to create the best possible environment for teaching and learning,” Davis said. “My experience as an undergraduate at Salem State University provided the foundation upon which I was able to build my professional career as an educator, school leader and school district administrator. There is no doubt in my mind that the lessons learned in SSU classrooms, along with the opportunities to serve as a student leader on campus, helped me to hone the skills needed to succeed in my chosen profession. I look forward to supporting students, educators and staff in ways that lead to ongoing growth and continued success.”
Davis is also noted for the number of other Salem boards she has served on. That includes serving for more than 15 years, including as vice president, on the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc., as a trustee at Salem Academy Charter School and the Salem Community Charter School, as a board of directors member for the Salem Education Foundation and Children’s Friends and Family Services, and as a board member at Hamilton Hall. In 2017, Davis received the George Ellison Volunteer of the Year Award for her dedication and service to the university.
