The paper “Fossil fuel racism in the United States: How Phasing out coal, oil and gas can protect communities” was named by Energy Research and Social Sciences as its most downloaded article of 2023, having been downloaded over 13,500 times.
The study had over 150,000 engagements on X (formally twitter) and was cited by MSNBC, MotherJones, Common Dreams, The Union of Concerned Scientists, Oil Change International, and The United Nations Production Gap report.
The paper was published by Professor Noel Healy (Geography and Sustainability Department, Salem State University), and colleagues from Greenpeace USA and Taproot Earth. The study maps out the disproportionate harms at every stage of the coal, oil, and gas lifecycles for Black, Brown, Indigenous and poor communities.
