The SSU Earth Days Planning Committee announces a creative writing contest for Salem State students to share their thoughts about climate change. Winning entries will be published and will receive cash prizes.
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit a written reflection not to exceed 500 words addressing the prompt below:
Climate change presents a profound threat to our natural and societal systems. The threat will affect generations to come, calling us to reflect on the Iroquois Confederacy philosophy that our decisions today should consider the next seven generations.
Thinking a bit nearer-term, please write a letter to your grandchild who is starting college in the year 2070. Your letter should address climate change. What is your message to them on this topic?
Submission Deadline-Friday, March 22 by 11:59 pm. Submit to arts@salemstate.edu. One entry per student.
Faculty are asked to encourage student participation, such as providing extra credit for participation to relevant classes. Cash prizes will be awarded at the Earth Days Award Ceremony on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 5 pm. Winners will have the opportunity to read their entries at the ceremony. Winning entries will be published in Red Skies.
Please direct any questions to: arts@salemstate.edu.
The contest is co-sponsored by First Year Success and Alpha Lambda Delta and supported by the English Department.
