This is your opportunity to create postcard-sized art that speaks to the climate emergency and this year's Earth Days theme: "There Is No Planet B." Everyone is welcome to participate.
Mail art, also known as postal art and correspondence art, is a populist artistic movement centered on sending small-scale works through the postal service. It started as a way for artists to circumvent the museum and gallery systems and have their artwork more widely distributed and publicly viewed.
In that spirit, “THERE IS NO PLANET B” is a university-wide call for mail art that addresses climate concerns. For more information about the Earth Days theme, please see the website.
Participation Guidelines
- Create a 4x6-inch postcard. Artworks can include drawings, collages, paintings, prints, photos, etc.
- Please include your email on each submission, as a contact for potential buyers. Please also indicate your affiliation (student, staff, alumni, community member).
- Mail your postcard to Ken Reker, P.O. Box #134, Swampscott, Ma., 01907 by April 1, 2021.
The art will be assembled in an online exhibition at the Salem State Winfisky Gallery and posted for sale ($5.00 each with proceeds going to the artist). Each participant is responsible for the delivery and collection of any sales at the end of the exhibition.
Cash prizes will be awarded to outstanding student artworks. This is the only judged art competition at Salem State. Everyone is welcome to participate, but only Salem State students are eligible for the awards. Please help spread the word to the community. Faculty may consider rewarding participation with extra credit as a way of engaging students in diverse majors who might not typically participate in Earth Days events.
