Earth Days Student Writing Contest Launched

Deadline is March 24
Feb 18, 2025
Earth Days 2025 will take place from April 7th to 11th.

The Earth Days Planning Committee invites undergraduate and graduate students to share their thoughts about climate change by participating in a student writing contest. Winning entries will be published in Red Skies and will receive cash prizes.

Students are asked to submit a written reflection not to exceed 500 words addressing this prompt:

Climate change presents a profound threat to our natural and societal systems. The threat will affect generations to come, calling us to reflect on the Iroquois Confederacy philosophy that our decisions today should consider the next seven generations.

Thinking a bit nearer term, please write a letter to a student who is starting college in the year 2075.  Your letter should address climate change, and you may write from the present day or an imagined future. What is your message to them on this topic?

Please submit entries by Monday, March 24 by 11:59 pm, to arts@salemstate.edu.

Winners will have the opportunity to read their entries at the Earth Days Award Ceremony on Thursday April 10, 2025 at 5 pm in Charlotte Forten Hall room 123.

Faculty are encouraged to share this opportunity with their students and, for relevant courses, to consider offering extra credit for participation. Please direct any questions to arts@salemstate.edu.
