Dear Faculty and Staff,
No matter your political beliefs, many agree that the presidential election’s outcome has brought surprise and strong feelings. In light of the results, we should take this time to appreciate one of the true benefits of American Democracy: the peaceful transfer of power. After a long and contentious campaign, President Barack Obama will meet with President-Elect Donald Trump at the White House today. Secretary Hillary Clinton, having conceded the race to her opponent early Wednesday morning, has joined calls for unity. There are countries around the world in which such a peaceful process would be unthinkable.
It is important for us to respect the process: we value our free and open elections. We value the balance of power that is imbedded in our three branches of government and that our democracy is indeed the best form of government in the world. The outcomes are not always the ones we personally want, but they do reflect the will of the nation.
This election has been described as the most divisive in recent history. Many of us are saddened and disappointed with the results while others might feel elated. In the final analysis, the work of Salem State University leaders goes on. Our responsibility to our campus community, especially students, is critically important today, tomorrow, and over the next several weeks, as we discuss what all of this means going forward.
Our mission at Salem State has not changed and our work is needed more than ever before. We need to continue to work together, collaborate, and find common ground despite our differences, to ensure opportunity for those who dream of a higher education and the many doors it opens. Inclusive excellence is still the aspirational goal for our campus. This is our resolve and this is what we will continue to work for now and into the future.
I ask for your help supporting students and one another. Our Dean of Students, Carla Tharp, sent a message to students yesterday about the resources available to them on campus. The letter can be read here. Two Brave Space discussion forums were held with students, faculty and staff yesterday, and others will be scheduled in the weeks ahead. As we work to promote unity, we must also appreciate and continue to encourage the tremendous student engagement that took place on our campus leading up to this election. Nearly 550 students voted, following months of voter registration drives, debate watches, panel discussions and more. Our students were engaged, and we must inspire them to continue making their voices heard.
As mentors and leaders on campus, we should promote unity, respect, engagement and dialogue – now and always.
