Prewriting, or the moments that precede writing, are among the most astonishing aspects of writing, for the Nothing of the preverbal abuts the Something of writing. One moment, no ideas for writing; the next, a workable idea, image, or phrase, and the student is typing. Clearly, something occurs during prewriting that filters into the next part of the process: prewriting is needed for a draft to happen. It’s not just a matter of not yet having discovered the right start or right set of words: even more so, prewriting is about engaging the preverbal. In this workshop, we will look at prewriting and invention—the earliest phases of a writing process. How do we help students navigate from the blank screen to first words, from the preverbal to the first draft? We discuss different approaches to prewriting and invention for the first-year composition classroom beyond the old chestnut of brainstorming.Thursday, October 27, 4-6 PM, Meier Hall 301. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP apeary@salemstate.edu by Thursday, October 13.
