Many don’t realize how important a follow-up email can be – opportunities can be lost without a follow-up email, especially if there are a large number of applicants, your follow-up email can help your name stick out and show interest and responsibility!
When applying to positions, it is important to keep a list of the places you applied to, the contacts you’ve received, and when you applied. It is recommended to follow-up with the company two weeks after applying. Make sure you track on list when you’ve sent a follow-up email. But how do you write such an email?
Start with the subject line: Be clear and concise. The goal is to give an idea to the recipient what the email will be about. (Example: “Follow-up on [Job Title] application: [Your Name]” or “Salem State Job and Internship Fair Follow-Up”)
Draft the body of your email: Start out with a greeting, and then a brief introduction as to why you’re emailing. See below an example for a follow-up after the Salem State Job and Internship Fair:
“Good morning/afternoon [Employer Name]
My name is_______. It was a pleasure to meet you at the Job and Internship Fair on [Date of Event]. I truly appreciate your time and the opportunity to learn about [Company Name] and the exciting opportunities available! It was great to hear about [Insert a meaningful thing shared during the conversation].”
End your email with appreciation and a signature:
“Thank you again for your time and insights, it was truly a pleasure.
Best regards,
[Your First and Last Name]
[Your Phone Number]
Optional Things to Include
What if you found a position and you’re going to apply/have applied? Include the following:
“After our conversation, I am very interested in a future with [Company Name]. I wanted to let you know that I [have applied/will be applying] for the [Position Name]. I believe my skills in [Most relevant Skills or Experience] would make me a strong fit for the team.”
What if you’d like to connect on LinkedIn?
“If willing, could I please connect with you on LinkedIn?” - If they say yes, initiate the connection on LinkedIn!
What if you aren’t applying for a current position, but you would like to share your resume for future opening?
“Additionally, I’ve attached my resume for your reference. Please feel free to keep me in mind for any future opportunities that may align with my background. I’d be thrilled to explore ways I could contribute to your team.”
Even after sharing your resume, keep an eye on the organization for openings and still actively apply to the one’s you’re interested in!
One last tip: Be sure that your voicemail inbox is not full, and that your voicemail message is either the default or professional!
