Congratulations to the geography faculty and students of Salem State University who participated in the Geography Bowl and presented their research at the annual New England - St. Lawrence Valley (NESTVAL) Geographical Society conference at Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, October 14-16, 2016. NESTVAL is the regional division of the national American Association of Geographers (AAG).
Each fall, NESTVAL hosts a conference at a regional college or university where students and faculty can present their research and where students from different institutions match wits in a Geography Bowl, competing for bragging rights for their school, and a chance to compete at the World Geography Bowl at the national AAG conference in spring. This year 10 teams competed. Salem State was well represented by students Jackie Bohnwagner, Holly Herring, Samuel Kobrosky, Joey Mack, and Megan Moseley. Their coach, geography professor John Hayes, participated as a moderator. The Salem State team won two games handily, but lost the third by only 5 points, which prevented them from making it to the final round. We are proud of the performance of our SSU World Geography Bowl team!
Participation and presentation at this conference is an important part of professional development in this discipline, and Salem State’s geography department was well represented thanks to the hard work of faculty and students and generous support from the geography department, the College of Arts and Sciences and the academic affairs office.
