GIS Day at SSU

Area high school students learn about Geographic Information Systems and its application to environmental issues
Mar 25, 2019

On Thursday March 14, while campus was quiet during spring break, the geography department hosted more than 50 students and teachers from Essex Technical, Marblehead and Swampscott high schools for GIS Day.

This community engagement program introduced advanced geographic mapping tools to high school students interested in environmental issues. The students from each of the schools were mixed with each other and then divided into three multi-school groups. During the day, the groups of students rotated through three separate GIS-related presentations, which included the basics of computer mapping, how to create maps with MassGIS online data, and how to fly drones and collect data. At the end of the day the students presented their environmental or GIS work.

This is the second GIS Day held by the geography department. Geography professors Keith Ratner, John Hayes and Stephen Young presented the workshops.
