GIS Grad Student Study Shows 1 in 9 Bridges are Not Structurally Sound

Report co-authored with Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center
Oct 19, 2022

As part of her capstone project for the graduate Geo-Information Science program at Salem State, graduate student Hallah Elbeleidy worked with professor Marcos Luna (geography & sustainability) and Dr. Phineas Baxandall, Senior Policy Analyst & Advocacy Director at the Massachusetts Budget & Policy Center, to examine the condition of bridges across Massachusetts. Hallah's research was based on data compiled by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and showed that a significant number of the Commonwealth's bridges are not structurally sound. Moreover, these structurally unsound bridges are not distributed equally across the Commonwealth. Some communities  - especially racial minorities and limited English speaking households - are more likely to be near these unsound structures than others. The public report - "A Bridge Too Far: Sagging Investment Leaves 644 Massachusetts Bridges Structurally Deficient" - is part of a larger series of analyses by MassBudget to highlight the need for greater public investment in the state's infrastructure and public services.

The co-authored report received significant media attention and was profiled in over a dozen media outlets across the state:
