Leanne McGuinness ’17 Receives 2024 Rising Star Award

Nov 14, 2024

Leanne McGuinness ’17, of Plymouth, formerly of Lynn, has been named the 2024 recipient of the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation’s Rising Star Award for her contributions to the community through professional and philanthropic work.

Presented to graduates who received their degree within the last 15 years, McGuinness received a scholarship to Salem State’s nursing program but had to pause her studies after her first semester when she was appointed custody of her younger sibling. She took on a position as a CNA and eventually returned to the nursing program, graduating cum laude and receiving the Student Nurse Award from her peers.

After completing her degree in 2017, McGuinness went on to Regis College for her master’s degree and became a nurse practitioner. Once the pandemic hit, she was on the frontlines as part of the vaccine clinic rollout at the Marshfield Fair site where up to 1,200 vaccines were given out daily. She also became the first public health nurse for the town of Kingston, Mass.

“I thrive on providing reliable and compassionate care to my patients,” McGuinness said. “Salem State gave me a strong foundation in patient care and clinical skills and I’m so honored that the university continues to recognize my contributions to the healthcare profession.”

In addition to her commitment within the nursing community, McGuinness is an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Plymouth South Middle School PTA and athletics, Massachusetts Public Health Associates, the American Heart Association, and more.

“Nurses have an immeasurable impact on our healthcare system,” Associate Director of Alumni Relations Mike Mitchell ’07 said. “We are so proud of her work to keep our community healthy and safe and are proud to call her a Viking.”
