Marcos Luna

Marcos Luna (geography and sustainability) was honored with the 2024 Latino Excellence Award by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus on Friday, October 25, 2024, in a ceremony held at the State House in Boston. Luna was nominated by Massachusetts State Representative Adrian Madaro (1st Suffolk) for his research and advocacy to promote environmental justice. Luna's mapping and analysis were pivotal to the drafting and passage of the Commonwealth's first environmental justice law.
The ‘Black Excellence on the Hill’ and the 'Latino Excellence Awards' are annual events hosted by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus to commemorate Black and Latino Community leaders and trailblazers who are moving the needle forward in cities and towns across the Commonwealth.
Marcos Luna is a professor of geography and sustainability and the coordinator of the graduate Geo-Information Science program at Salem State University. He is a governor-appointed member of the Massachusetts Environmental Justice Council and an appointed member of the Massachusetts Energy Transformation Advisory Board. He serves on the boards of directors of GreenRoots, a community-based environmental justice organization serving Chelsea, East Boston and surrounding communities, and of Comunidades Enraizadas Community Land Trust, which seeks to create permanent affordable housing solutions for low income and immigrant families in Chelsea.
