A message from President John D. Keenan:
I’m deeply saddened to share with you that Nancy Harrington, president emerita of Salem State University, has passed away. As Salem State’s first female and 12th president, she was a trailblazer and mentor to many. President Harrington spent a half century on our campus as a student rising through the ranks to president where she presided for 17 years.
Those of us who knew President Harrington knew of her talent, leadership and deep commitment to our students. Indeed, her vision for Salem State College paved the way for us to become Salem State University in 2010. President Harrington was a proud Salem State alumna, receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. Before becoming president in 1990, she served as dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs, dean of Graduate and Continuing Education, associate vice president of Academic Affairs in Graduate and Continuing Education, and acting vice president of Academic Affairs.
I have learned that President Harrington’s family plans to hold a private ceremony at this time and hopes to create an opportunity for others to celebrate her life when it is safe to do so. I will be certain to share these details when they become available. In the meantime, please join me in remembering the leadership of Salem State’s 12th president, Dr. Nancy Harrington.
