Political Science Students Inducted into Phi Sigma Alpha Honor Society

May 19, 2015

The department of political science inducted 19 political science majors and minors into Phi Sigma Alpha in an April 22 ceremony. Phi Sigma Alpha is the national political science honor society, with 500 chapters nationwide.

In his opening remarks to the audience of students, family members and faculty, Professor Richard Levy noted the value in the workplace of critical thinking and writing skills developed in political science courses. Levy also observed, “Education in the US was developed not just as a job training organ but to help people understand their society and become good citizens. Democracy cannot work without informed and critical citizens and this too is what we hope we have contributed to.”

State Senator Joan Lovely (D-Salem), a 2006 political science graduate of Salem State University, and College of Arts and Sciences Dean Michele Sweeney were featured speakers at the ceremony.
