Dear Salem State Community,
As you know, President Patricia Maguire Meservey has announced her intention to retire after the end of this academic year. The university has grown and matured in many ways under President Meservey's leadership, including growth in the physical campus, increased graduation rates, expansion of academic programs, improvements in student life and successful completion of the 10,000 Reasons Campaign. Hers has been a decade-long period of accomplishment that will be difficult to match.
Now the work begins to find a successor. The Board of Trustees will act expeditiously to appoint a search committee drawn from the Salem State University community. In doing so, we will follow the Board of Higher Education guidelines, which call for at least three trustees, as well as:
- Three full-time faculty members;
- One undergraduate student;
- One individual each representing professional staff, non-unit staff, and support staff;
- One representative of the Salem State University Foundation; and
- One representative appointed by the Massachusetts Board/Office of Higher Education
Anyone wishing to be considered for appointment to the search committee should contact Lynne Montague at lmontague@salemstate.edu by 9 am on January 17. Appointments to the committee are expected to be made by January 18, with the initial meeting of the committee on January 25.
The search committee will operate pursuant to the state's open meeting law, intended to allow maximum public accountability while preserving candidate confidentiality when appropriate.
Thank you,
Paul Mattera
Chair
Salem State University Board of Trustees
