The Council on Teaching and Learning is offering a limited number of $1000 grants to faculty who are interested in participating in its Teaching and Learning 2017 Summer Grants Program. The goals of this program are to improve teaching and learning effectiveness and to encourage innovation in teaching. Each grant is meant to support faculty in developing and testing pedagogical projects aimed at improving teaching and learning during the next academic year. Preference will be given to applicants who propose an innovation in their teaching or courses. Faculty members are encouraged to develop proposals that will test innovative teaching methods as well as provide assessment procedures to measure the success of the innovation.
To be eligible for a Teaching and Learning Summer Grant, faculty members must submit a proposal online to the Council on Teaching and Learning no later than 5 pm on Wednesday, April 19.
All proposals will be reviewed by members of the Council on Teaching and Learning. If a proposal is accepted, a letter will be sent to the grantee announcing the Council's decision, stating the amount of the grant, and listing the criteria for the brief final report.
A reply stating that the grantee accepts the conditions stated in the criteria will be solicited at that time. Each accepted proposal must be implemented during either the fall 2017 or spring 2018 semester.
As part of the Teaching and Learning Summer Grants Program, grantees will be required to share their findings with members of the university’s teaching community via a short presentation and distribution of a one-page abstract of the project at the annual Pearls and Perils conference to be held in May 2018. Proposals will not be returned. Decisions of the Council are final and not subject to appeal. Proposals may be adjusted and re-submitted for consideration during a subsequent competition. Because the focus of the project should be on the development of a faculty member's teaching, the applicant is expected to be actively involved in the project.

Proposal Guidelines
Faculty may submit individual proposals, or proposals in collaboration with otherfaculty. (Members of the Council on Teaching and Learning may not apply.)
Proposal submission deadline: Wednesday April 19, 2017, 5 pm
Each proposal should include:
- A brief abstract with:
- Title of the project
- Faculty member name(s)
- A detailed presentation of the proposed project including:
- Description and rationale of the project
- Project goals and objectives
- Relationship of proposed project to Summer Grants program goals
- Methodology and procedures, including justification
- A statement of the anticipated relevance and significance of the project to the class, department, and larger university community
- Methods of assessment for project outcomes
Successful applicants will be notified in writing prior to this year’s Pearls and PerilsAnnual Conference, which will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017. Grant awards will be publicly announced at the Pearls and Perils luncheon; therefore, award winners are expected to attend the conference.
Reminder: If the proposal is accepted, upon completion of the project, grantees are expected to develop a short presentation and a one-page abstract of the project and conduct a brief discussion at the 2018 Pearls and Perils conference.
