SALEM, MA – Salem State’s Student Government Association (SGA) – in partnership with the Working Group for Racial Justice, the departments of sociology, psychology, and interdisciplinary studies, the office of diversity and multicultural affairs, and the office of inclusive excellence – will be hosting a lecture with Tim Wise, writer, anti-racism activist, and speaker.
“Bringing Tim Wise to campus gives students an opportunity to participate in constructive, challenging conversations around difficult topics,” said Joshua Lane, president of the student government association. “The SGA is eager to bring a speaker that defies the status quo and will offer students a view of opinions that they may or may not share. The event offers yet another way to stimulate thinking and conversation about issues affecting our country.”
Following a morning workshop with Salem State community members, Wise will be on campus Tuesday, September 26 at 6 pm in Veterans Hall, Ellison Campus Center for “An Evening with Tim Wise: Challenging the Culture of Cruelty: Understanding and Defeating Race and Class Inequity.” In this lecture, he will draw from his newest book, Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Jeopardizing the Future of America. This event will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.
“This lecture will examine the ways in which American politics and culture serve to rationalize inequalities on the basis of class and race,” said Rebecca Comage, director, diversity and multicultural affairs at Salem State. “Giving our students the platform to contest a variety of ideas, and respectfully disagree, are the pillars of higher education and one of the foundations of Salem State. Our Student Government Association and various groups on campus chose to bring Tim Wise to campus to tackle issues on the minds of many of our students.”
Limited tickets are available to the public and can be reserved visiting the information desk at the Ellison Campus Center, 352 Lafayette Street, Salem. For more information or to check ticket availability, call Rebecca Comage at 978.542.2404.
