SALEM, MA – Salem State University will host its 28th annual MLK Week, honoring and celebrating the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This series is organized by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and includes events hosted and sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement, Alumni Affairs, Student Life, and Chartwells. All events are open to the general public and media.
This year’s theme, “I am the Dream,” serves to power members of the Salem State community and renew faith in one another. The celebration will include a week of events offering opportunities to better understand current events, affirm that change is possible, and recognize the role we play in strengthening the community and continuing the work started by Reverend King and so many others.
The following events are scheduled from January 15 to January 22:
Monday, January 15, 5:30 pm
MLK Vigil and Freedom March |Veterans Hall, Ellison Campus Center and will conclude at Viking Hall, room 123. The Candlelight Vigil is held in partnership with the City of Salem’s No Place for Hate Committee.

28th Annual MLK Convocation with Keynote Speaker Farai Chideya |Veterans Hall, Ellison Campus Center
Farai Chideya is a reporter, political and cultural analyst, and educator. Over the years she has worked in print, television, radio, and digital media; covered every Presidential election since 1996; and traveled to 28 countries and 49 states to report, learn, and explore. A 1990 graduate of Harvard University, she was also a spring 2012 fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. She frequently appears on public radio and cable television, speaking about race, politics, and culture. Ms. Chideya is well known for her recent lectures on “The Color of Our Future: Race, Ethnicity and Our Role in Shaping the New America” and What Happens to Equality When We’re All Minorities? — Re-Imagining King’s Dream for a Post-Majority America” among others. Salem State University, established in 1854, is a comprehensive, public institution of higher learning located approximately 15 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts.
