Salem State’s campus proximity to the ocean and countless natural wonders remind the community that protecting the Earth is a top priority. Several new initiatives this year have already made an impact on our sustainability efforts.
- Salem’s new bike sharing program Zagster launched this semester. Vikings enjoy both an annual membership and the first two hours of each ride for free. Bike stations are located across Salem, with Salem State locations on Lafayette Street and Central Campus. The popular program recently celebrated the 2,000-ride mark, a resounding success for this newly-launched partnership.
- For students bringing their own bikes to campus, the early sunsets of fall can pose a danger on the roads. On November 2, we hosted MassBike as they installed dozens of free bike lights to increase visibility for bicyclists on campus.
- The Dunkin Donuts franchise on North Campus switched to paper cups for hot beverages in November. The change was implemented in response to MassPIRG students’ concerns about the public and environmental health effects of the polystyrene foam.
- Taking steps to conserve water is another key component of sustainability. Between fiscal years 2014 and 2017, water use on campus is down by 21%, a result of fixture upgrades.
“It has been exciting to see the strong interest in sustainability on campus,” observes Tara Gallagher, Sustainability and Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator. “I’m looking forward to engaging the community in making our transition to single-stream recycling a success and in developing near-term sustainability targets for us all to work towards.”
