SALEM, Mass. (June 8, 2015) – Salem State has announced that Peggy Carl will join the university as its new director of athletics and recreation effective July 13.
Carl most recently served for six years as director of athletics and recreation at Beloit College in Beloit, Wis. Previously she was the head men's and women's swimming coach and served in a variety of administrative capacities at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif., where she served for 18 years.
According to Jim Stoll, associate vice president and dean of students at Salem State, “Peggy clearly has the talent and experience to continue to strengthen our athletic and recreation programs.”
Well-known nationally in the world of swimming and diving, Carl has served on numerous National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) committees and has helped to organize and facilitate national championships (2000-2015). In 1996, she was selected to run the logistics for the swimming and diving competition at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
She said she is looking forward to her new role at Salem State. "I chose Salem State in part because of its mission, which describes the university as ‘a diverse community of learners.’” Carl said. “The attention being paid at the institutional level to diversity and inclusion are important and aspirational for me as well as for the (athletics) department.”
“I believe that Viking athletics are poised to do great things and I have high expectations for our collective success in all areas,” she added.
Carl is taking over for Tim Shea who is retiring after serving 14 years as Salem State’s athletic director. "I am honored to have been selected as Salem State's next director of athletics and recreation,” Carl said, “and I am grateful to president (Pat) Meservey, vice president (Scott) James, and associate vice president Stoll for their trust in me as we move the Salem State Vikings athletic program forward."
