How has attending a Hispanic and minority-serving institution (HSI-MSI) shaped your college experience?
During my first semester of graduate school, I attended the ¡Sí Se Puede! Leadership Summit, organized by the inclusive excellence office for Hispanic Heritage Month. It was an incredible experience where I connected with students from other universities and built meaningful relationships. One of the highlights was hearing Alejandra Campoverdi share her journey as a first-generation student. Her story was inspiring and validating—many of us in the room related deeply to her experiences.
Moments like these remind me of the power of representation and community. Working as a graduate assistant for the HSI initiative has also been especially rewarding. It’s given me a platform to support Latinx students and help create a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
Durante mi primer semestre de posgrado, asistí al ¡Sí Se Puede! Leadership Summit, organizado por la Oficina de Inclusive Excellence en celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Fue una experiencia increíble, donde pude conectar con estudiantes de otras universidades y construir relaciones significativas. Uno de los momentos más especiales fue escuchar a Alejandra Campoverdi compartir su trayectoria como estudiante de primera generación. Su historia fue profundamente inspiradora y significativa, ya que muchos de nosotros nos sentimos identificados con sus experiencias. Momentos como ese me recuerdan el poder de la representación y la importancia de la comunidad. Además, trabajar como Asistente Graduada para la iniciativa HSI ha sido una experiencia especialmente gratificante. Este rol me ha dado la oportunidad de apoyar a estudiantes latinos y contribuir a crear un ambiente universitario más inclusivo y acogedor.
How has your cultural background or identities shaped your experience at Salem State?
As a first-generation Latina, my cultural background has been a constant source of motivation and resilience throughout my academic journey. At Salem State, embracing my heritage has helped me connect with others who share similar experiences. I've had opportunities to share and celebrate my culture through Hispanic Heritage Month events and my work with the HSI initiative. Being part of a campus that values diversity is empowering and allows me to bring my whole self to the table, where my identity is celebrated rather than minimized.
Como latina de primera generación, mi origen cultural ha sido una fuente constante de motivación y resiliencia a lo largo de mi trayectoria académica. En Salem State, he encontrado espacios donde celebrar mi herencia me ha permitido construir lazos con otros estudiantes que comparten experiencias similares. A través de eventos como las celebraciones del Mes de la Herencia Hispana y mi participación en la iniciativa HSI, he tenido la oportunidad de compartir y celebrar mi cultura. Es muy significativo ser parte de una universidad que valora la diversidad y me permite mostrarme tal y como soy, donde mi identidad es celebrada y no minimizada.
How has Salem State helped prepare you for your future goals?
Salem State has given me a strong academic foundation and opportunities to grow professionally. The university’s focus on inclusion has shaped my passion for helping underrepresented communities succeed. As a graduate assistant for the HSI initiative and a student success coach, I’ve developed leadership, data analysis and mentoring skills—all of which will be essential in my career. The supportive environment has also encouraged me to take risks, pursue my goals, and actively contribute to making the campus more inclusive for all students.
Salem State me ha brindado no solo una sólida formación académica, sino también oportunidades para crecer profesionalmente. Su enfoque en la inclusión ha moldeado mi pasión por apoyar a comunidades subrepresentadas. Como Asistente Graduada en la iniciativa HSI y como Student Success Coach, he desarrollado habilidades valiosas en liderazgo, análisis de datos y mentoría, todas fundamentales para mi futuro profesional. Además, el ambiente de apoyo en Salem State me ha motivado a asumir nuevos retos, perseguir mis metas con seguridad y contribuir activamente a que el campus sea un espacio más inclusivo para todos los estudiantes.
Have you participated in any internships, research projects, or leadership opportunities that have helped shape your career aspirations?
Yes! My graduate assistantship with the inclusive excellence office has shaped my career goals. Through this role, I’ve gained experience collecting and analyzing data to support the university’s efforts to become a Hispanic-serving institution. I also contributed to writing an article highlighting our findings, which helped strengthen my analytical and writing skills. This experience confirmed my passion for using data to drive change and advance initiatives that support students.
Mi experiencia como Asistente Graduada en la Oficina de Inclusive Excellence ha sido clave para definir mis metas profesionales. A través de este rol, he adquirido valiosa experiencia recopilando y analizando datos que respaldan los esfuerzos de la universidad por convertirse en una Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). También he contribuido a la redacción de un artículo destacando nuestros hallazgos, lo que me ha permitido perfeccionar mis habilidades analíticas y de escritura. Esta experiencia ha fortalecido mi pasión por usar los datos como motor de cambio y para impulsar iniciativas que beneficien a la comunidad estudiantil.
What advice would you give prospective students considering Salem State?
Take full advantage of the diverse and inclusive opportunities Salem State offers. Whether participating in cultural events, getting involved in leadership roles, or connecting with faculty and staff who care about your success, you’ll find a community supporting your growth. Use the many resources available, from academic support to career development programs.
As a first-gen Latina, I’ve found incredible value in engaging with these services and being part of initiatives that helped me grow personally and professionally.
