SALEM, MASS. – Salem State University’s School of Nursing hosted a nationally recognized expert on new nurses’ transitions to practice in November, a speaker who carried on the legacy of a legend in the school’s history.
The School of Nursing welcomed Dr. Geralyn Altmiller to campus Nov. 14 for an event titled “Facilitating a Successful Transition to Practice: the role of practice partners, academic faculty, and learners.”
Altmiller’s visit was sponsored by the Dr. Joanne Evans Fund, an endowment established by a generous gift from Dr. Joanne Evans, one of the earliest faculty members of Salem State’s School of Nursing. Established in 2021, Evans’s gift was specifically intended to support presentations and learning opportunities for students, faculty and alumni.
Known to those around her as Gerry, Altmiller is a national speaker and recognized expert on new nurses’ transitions to practice. As new nurses graduate and become licensed professionals, nursing faculty are often quite concerned about their future. She reported on her findings of a qualitative study examining the transition to practice nationally. She then joined a panel with new nurses and regional nurse leaders to discuss transitions to practice.
The event was especially representative of Dr. Evans, as she valued the relationships she developed with students, was known as a gifted mentor, and was a lifelong friend and supporter of students long after they left the School of Nursing.
In addition to being sponsored by the Dr. Joanne Evans Fund, the event was further supported by School of Nursing chairperson Marion Frost and Professional Development Committee members Kathleen Adee, Cheryl Williams, Brian Curry Krieger and Amy Wachsmuth.
