Monday, September 2 



Elevated Thought with Marquis Victor 10 am, 2 pm, 5 pm: choose one session

Sophia Gordon Theater

CEO of Elevated Thought and Salem State Alum Marquis Victor will be here to welcome first year students and share how they can make a difference using their art and creativity in impacting our diverse university!

(Mandatory for all first-year students)

 

Community Expectations: 12 and 4 pm-choose one session-Sophia Gordon Theater (Mandatory for all first-year students)

Learn about your rights and responsibilities as a member of the Salem State Community.

 

Tuesday, September 3: 



Fall 2024 Opening Day: All Day

Opening Day at Salem State is filled with exciting activities to kick off your new school year! The day begins with a resident student breakfast at 7 am, followed by a morning full of events to help connect you with the campus, including the Academic Convocation, class photos, and meet-and-greet sessions with deans and faculty. As the afternoon rolls in, enjoy a BBQ lunch, outdoor games, and ice cream sundae-making. It's the perfect way to connect with fellow students, meet your professors, and dive into campus life. Don’t miss out on the fun!

 

Academic Convocation: O’Keefe Complex, 10-11 am (First Year Students Only)

(This event is mandatory for first year students)

New students in the Class of 2028 and the Salem State campus community are invited to attend the 43rd annual Academic Convocation ceremony to celebrate the start of the new academic year. This year's Convocation speaker is Dr. Anne DeFelippo, professor in the School of Nursing.

 

Welcome Carnival for Emerging Scholars and STEP: Ellison Campus Center, 3-4:30 pm (This is a required event for all program participants)

All first-year students who are a part of the Emerging Scholars Program or Student Transition and Engagement Program (STEP), join your fellow students and the program staff for a required Welcome Carnival – play games, win goofy prizes, enjoy some snacks, and learn more about the semester ahead.

 

Games and Grub with Esports: Ellison Campus Center, 5:30-8:30 pm

Start the semester off at the esports lounge! Make sure to stop by to pick up food before it's gone! Game demos and competitions will be held throughout the evening. No pre-registration is required.

 

Wednesday, September  4:



Fall Semester Classes Begin.

Meet the Minis (Mini Horses)-11am – 1pm-North Campus Quad

Are you looking for a little happiness on your first day of classes?  Meet the Minis…horses that is! Stop by the area outside the First Year Experience Office (North Campus, Library Quad) and spend some time with the most adorable mini-horses you’ve ever seen. (Sponsored by First Year Experience)

Women’s Volleyball vs. UMass Boston: 6 pm-O’Keefe Center

Men's Soccer vs Regis: 7 pm-Alumni Field, O’Keefe Center



Thursday, September 5: 

Adorable Animals Petting Zoo 11am – 1pm-North Campus Quad



Add a little joy in your life with the New England Party Animals Petting Zoo!  Bunnies, Guinea pigs, hamsters, baby chicks and more!  Stop by the area outside the Frist Year Experience Office (North Campus, Library Quad) and spend some quality time with these cuddly critters. (Sponsored by First Year Experience)

Center for Justice and Liberation Meet & Greet Lunch Ellison Campus Center, 12-1:30 pm

Interested in getting involved on campus? Join the Center for Justice and Liberation (CJL) at our Meet & Greet Lunch! Connect with CJL Staff and student leaders, learn about our program offerings, and find community at SSU!

 

Friday, September 6:

 

Blacklight Dodgeball: Gassett Fitness and Recreation Center, 7:30 pm -12 am

Teams of 6-10 people will compete under the glow of the blacklight to determine the champion. Neon t-shirts and glow materials will be provided. Guests over 18 are free with valid photo ID. You don’t want to miss this annual campus tradition!
