Tell me about yourself:
Hi all! My name is Michelle. I am a first-year student in the NP program. I have been a registered nurse for 10 years. I currently work as a visiting nurse in the Boston community. I have a special interest in oncologic nursing research and public health. It has always been a dream of mine to be a nurse practitioner, and I am super grateful to be on this journey. I hope to join the collective group of nurse practitioners and make an impactful difference in the lives of others.
What drew you to Salem State? What made you decide to start a graduate program?
My mother was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in July of 2023. I now found myself in waiting rooms not as a nurse but as a family member. The hardest moments of my family’s life have been met with support and compassion from every healthcare provider we met with. The knowledge and expertise of every healthcare professional on my mother’s care team have had an instrumental impact on our lives. Salem State has provided me the opportunity to provide the same support and compassion my own family has received to other families.
What makes your program department exciting/unique?
The Salem State nurse practitioner program is noteworthy and unique. Salem State has designed an accessible program that is inclusive for all nurses. The hybrid approach allows for online as well as in-person learning opportunities. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine, but I was unsure how I would be able to balance school, work, and life. Salem State has truly set up the NP program so that its students can be successful while maintaining balance in all aspects of their lives. The professors have created an educational setting that is inclusive, collaborative, and welcoming.
What are some highlights of being a student here so far?
The highlight of being a student here so far has been forming friendships with my classmates. The intimate class sizes in the nurse practitioner program provides students with the opportunity to get to know one another personally and allows for meaningful class discussions. I have learned about both nursing and life from my fellow peers. It is an honor to go on this journey with all of you, and I have formed lifelong friendships in the process.
What is the best advice you’ve received from a professor?
The best advice I have received from a professor during my time here at Salem State is to always remember the humanness in nursing. Your kindness, caring heart, and empathy make a difference in a patient’s life. With our collective professionalism and knowledge, we have created a profession that provides the highest standard of care. We provide comfort and support to patients during illness, injury, and chronic conditions. We play a pivotal role in administering care, educating patients, and advocating for vulnerable populations. Nurses have an immeasurable impact on our healthcare system.
Anything you enjoy in your free time?
I enjoy spending my free time with my family and close friends. I have a 3-year-old son Camden; being his mother is the joy of my life. I am fortunate to live by the beach, and we spend a lot of time outside walking on trails, riding bikes, and exploring. I am an avid Boston sports fan and enjoy playing various sports, including soccer and lacrosse. I also enjoy a warm cup of coffee and a Colleen Hoover novel.
