Volunteer to be a Facilitator for FYRE

First Year Reading Experience 2017-2018
Mar 26, 2017

The First Year Experience Office is looking for faculty, staff, administrator, and librarian volunteers to serve as facilitators for the ninth annual First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Facilitators receive a free copy of the FYRE book, "Bad Feminist" by Roxane Gay and are invited to participate in one of several luncheons over the course of the summer to discuss the themes of the book and learn more about their role as facilitators.

On Tuesday, September 5, facilitators will lead discussion groups with 15-25 first-year students.  Each group is co-led by two or more facilitators along with one or two upper-class student volunteers.  The schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 10:30-11:30 am  Convocation
  • 11:45 am  First-Year Student and FYRE Facilitator Welcome Picnic
  • 12:25 pm  Class of 2021 Photo
  • 12:45-2 pm  FYRE Discussion Groups
  • 2-3 pm  Ice Cream Social

For the past eight years, the First Year Reading Experience has provided students a common intellectual experience as they read a common book over the summer and think about issues related to the theme of the book. The discussion groups at the start of the semester allow students to begin developing relationships with their peers as well as institutional representatives. Program assessment has shown that students find value in both the book and the interactions with the group facilitators.
